Clinton City Schools uses the Tennessee Academic State Standards in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade. The Tennessee Academic Standards provide a common set of expectations for what students will know and be able to do at the end of a grade for each subject area. Our state’s standards are rooted in the knowledge and skills a student needs to succeed in their post-secondary studies and/or careers.

ELA

The ELA standards are designed to prepare students with the most important knowledge and 21st-century literacy skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary and workforce arenas. These standards emphasize critical and divergent thinking, problem-solving, active listening, recognition of patterns and anomalies, and evaluation and questioning of the source material.

The standards for ELA are divided into five strands:

• Foundational K-5 Literacy   

• Language 6-12   

• Reading   

• Speaking and Listening   

• Writing

MATH

The state board adopted new state math standards in April 2016, and they will be implemented in classrooms for the first time in the 2017-2018 school year. The math standards were designed to ensure that Tennessee graduated are prepared for the rigorous demands of mathematical understanding in college and career.

The eight Standards for Mathematical Practice are an important component of the mathematics standards for each grade and course, K-12. The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe the varieties of expertise, habits of minds, and productive dispositions that educators seek to develop in all students.

• Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them   

• Reason abstractly and quantitatively   

• Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others   

• Model with mathematics   

• Use appropriate tools strategically   

• Attend to precision  

• Look for and make use of structure   

• Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

SCIENCE

The state board adopted new state science standards in October 2016, and they will be implemented in classrooms in the 2018-2019 school year. The revised science standards were developed utilizing recommendations found in A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The State Board of Education adopted the current state social studies standards in July 2017. In grades K-5, the standards signal the importance of laying a solid foundation in how the world works, geography, Tennessee history, and United States history. The middle grades, 6-8, solidify that foundation while increasing the rigor of the content through learning about both world and United States history.
